Tips For Buying a New Windows Laptop

4/9/2014

Some things to think about when looking to buy a new Windows laptop…

Price will often be the governing factor, you simply can't spend more than you have, but it is important to get the most for your money. The amount of RAM you have is important, the more you have the better, but it is always worth knowing if this can be upgraded at a later date. Hard drive capacity, again the bigger the numbers the better it is (1 TB is better than 500 GB) but be mindful not to buy more than you actually need.

Screen size & optical drive
Size and weight is personal to you, some people prefer light portable laptops these will often have smaller screens and no optical drive. Some like a nice big screen as this will be their main computer. Do I need an optical drive? This means, do you need A DVD or Blu-Ray drive built into your laptop. There are some advantages to this, even if it is as simple as… it's there if you need it, but an external drive is inexpensive and can easily be added via USB at a later date.

Programs & equipment
It is always worth a little research to work out if the programs and peripherals you are currently running such as Microsoft Office, your antivirus program, printers and extra monitors will work with your new computer or if you will need purchase new versions and equipment, this in itself can quickly skyrocket costs.

Design

The general look and design of your laptop may at first not seem important, but potentially this laptop could be with you for some time, going everywhere with you, sitting on your side at home. It is important that you're happy with the way it looks, but mindful that you don't compromise looks for capabilities.

Connectivity & longevity
Check out the connectability of your laptop obviously WiFi is important but ask does it have Bluetooth, how many USB ports does it have, is there a HDMI socket? Do I need a HDMI socket? Battery life can vary massively from laptop to laptop. From as little as a few to over 10 hours. Always worth just checking how long the battery will actually last and if a high capacity battery is available for that model.

Operating system
There is nothing as sure as the operating system on your laptop will at some point be replaced, it is always worth knowing the expected lifecycle of your operating system, and fortunately Microsoft published this here: Microsoft Lifecyle Policy

Don't be persuaded into buying things you don't need in the shop! Often the things sold to you in the shop are available free or for a fraction of the cost elsewhere or online.

Windows 8... My Favourite Bits!

16/4/2014

Well, since my last post Microsoft has realised.... wait for the catchy name... Windows 8.1 update 1 (not 8.1.1 or 8.2, far too easy) but that said, there were some very handy tweaks.

Firstly if you are using a traditional size laptop or monitor screen, then this latest incarnation will boot up into the more familiar desktop view rather than the tile-based menu.

Thankfully, secondly they have reinstated the 'X' in the upper-right corner to close things without all that clicking and dragging palaver.

As I mentioned in an earlier post 'So is Microsoft Windows 8.1 really that bad?', the power button was previously a bit of a mystery but now prominently placed at the top of the Metro screen.

One of the more innovative features of Windows 8 is the 'Child Account' and 'Family Safety'. This can be set to compile a weekly report so that you can better protect your children.

As you can tell I do like Windows 8 and with the sad passing of XP, Windows 8 is the now, and as Microsoft seem to be listening to its customers and seem hell bent on improving it, Windows 8 is the future!

What Will the End of Windows XP Mean for Me?

17/3/2014

Good news, your Windows XP computer will not stop working or explode!

Bad news it will become more vulnerable as from the 8th of April 2014, because Microsoft will no longer be issuing free updates or security patches for Windows XP.

Question: Yeah but it's fine now, why will that change after the 8th of April?
It has been very well publicised that support for XP will be ending, those wishing to target XP computers are well aware of this and among other way can reverse engineer the updates or security patches for current operating systems such as windows 7 and 8 to help them expose weaknesses in previous versions. And if you wanted to get a computer to do something that it shouldn't you would probably hang fire until it was no longer protected properly.

Question: What can I do?

BACK UP ALL YOUR FILES!!! There are many ways to back up, you could back up to the cloud, or by way of an external hard drive or if you have no other option burn to DVDs. This is generally considered to be good advice anyway, but at least you will know you have the files important to you.

Question: What else can I do? You could buy a new computer. Some good deals are available here: Ebuyer >

You may be able to upgrade your operating system, this will depend on the spec of your computer. Please see Windows tutorial for more info, or have a chat with File Genie >

Change over to a Linux operating system. Please see here for more info: Move from Windows to Linux >

Question: I have an antivirus, will that protect my PC? Most anti-virus software makers will support Windows XP for 12 months or more. As mentioned earlier, this is not the full story and some paid antivirus programs may be not too far away from the price of a full Windows upgrade.

After nearly 13 years of Windows XP, for me is it is a bit like saying good bye to a trusted friend. However despite the bad press of some of the latest Windows versions, they are really not that bad and in many ways much better. Happy computing!
